  • Lobo Literacy Club

Who said school's out? It sure isn't for the curious crew at Global Academy of Phoenix! Diane Hernandez, Jr. High Language and Literacy Teacher, couldn't resist her persuasive students when they begged for more time and learning with her, so she created the Lobo Literacy Club!

Each week during the summer the club holds virtual meetings to discuss what they've read and share thoughts. They also enjoy activities relating to whales and the hearing impared, since these are focal topics of their first book. Connected activities include creating blackout art, exploring the world of whales, researching whale conservation centers, and learning sign language. But that's not all! Mrs. Hernandez is scheduling virtual meetings with whale conservationists and American Sign Language experts. Wow!

Want to get in on the fun? Check out this recording of whales: http://www.oceanmammalinst.org/songs.html or try your hand at blackout art: copy a page from a book or magazine, select certain words to create a poem, and blackout everything else! Check out this very cool example!
