Emergencies

In the event of an emergency, the nurse or other school personnel will contact the parent/guardian; please be sure your Emergency Card is correct and up-to-date, especially telephone numbers.  If needed, the nurse will summon the paramedics.  If parents/guardians cannot be reached, the school (acting in “loco parentis”) will do what is in the child's best interest.  If a child needs to be transported to the hospital by ambulance, someone from the school shall accompany the child.

Picking Up a Sick Child

Persons picking up sick children during the school day must first sign in with the front office.  They must sign the student out at the front desk upon leaving.  Persons picking up children during the school day must be on the Emergency Card/Data Card as a designated pick up person.  A picture ID will be required of those picking up children. Students sent home by the Health Office with a fever must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Students sent home with a possible contagious disease must bring back a doctor’s note on non-contagious status and been on medication for 24 hours.  Students who have had any contagious disease/ailment must report to the Health Office prior to going to class to receive clearance to be back in school.

Health Notifications

Ailments such as diabetes, epilepsy, cardiac diseases, asthma, and allergies are some of the diseases, which should be noted on health records and discussed with the health assistant.

Immunizations

Arizona law (A.R.S. 15-803) requires that a parent/guardian or person in “loco parentis” of a child provide the school with proof of immunization (history) at the time of enrollment. This proof (history) must include the month, day and year for each vaccination. A parent/guardian must show proof of immunizations for each child enrolling. A child is not permitted to attend classes until the immunization history has been provided and is current with Arizona State laws.

Medication

A physician must authorize prescription medication by written order with a copy given to the health office. Along with a physician’s written order, there must be parental written permission for each prescription medication.  Medication must be in the original container. The container must be clearly labeled.  All medication must be brought to school by a parent/guardian or other parent adult designee.  Students are not allowed to carry medication to administer to themselves, except for an asthma inhaler or an Epi pen as directed to do so by a physician.  Teachers are not permitted to hold or administer a student’s medication at school, this includes cough drops. 

Pediculosis (Head Lice)

Pediculosis  is defined as lice or lice eggs (nits).  The symptoms of lice are itching and/or the presence of lice and nits on hair parts of the body, particularly on the head and neck.

The best strategy for controlling lice is to use shampoos designed for treatment of lice combined with diligent nit removal.  Free shampoo is sometimes available from the Health Office.  Be sure to follow the directions on the label.  Nit removal is important, as some of the eggs will survive the shampoo treatments.  It is also important to shampoo all affected family members at the same time.  Be sure to shampoo everyone once again 7-10 days after the first treatment.  Generally, if the proper treatment is followed, students should miss no more than 2-4 days of school due to lice.   After 5 days the absence is considered unexcused.  Children with symptoms shall be excluded from school attendance until treatment has been effective.  Upon return to school, the student must report to the Health Office for screening before returning to class.
