AESD 2018-2019 School Letter Grades

  • Arizona A-F Accountability System

The Arizona State Board of Education released School Letter Grades on October 31, 2019.  The system used to calculate School Letter Grades is called the A-F Letter Grade Accountability System.

    Why are Letter Grades Issued?

State law (ARS§ 15-241) requires the Arizona Department of Education, subject to final adoption by the State Board of Education (SBE), to develop an annual achievement profile for every public school in the state based on an A through F scale.  For more information on the Arizona A-F School Accountability System visit the Arizona State Board of Education A-F Letter Grades website page.  School Letter Grades demonstrate one characteristic of school, for a more holistic view of our schools check out their School Report Card found on the AZ Schools Report Cards website.

    What Does the System Measure

The 2018-2019 A-F letter grades are just one measure of how a school is doing.  Points earned are based largely on student performance on the AzMERIT assessment in addition to a range of other measures.  For K-8 schools, the measurement areas include:

     A-F Pie Chart Visual
    • Proficiency in the English Language Arts and Math (30%)
    • Growth in English Language Arts and Math (50%)
    • Proficiency and Growth of English Language Learners (EL) (10%)
    • Acceleration and Readiness Measures, which consists of several measures including chronic absenteeism and the improved growth of subgroups like special education (10%)

Schools are awarded a percentage of points earned and then assigned a letter grade based on a grading scale determined by the Arizona State Board of Education (SBE).  Schools may appeal a letter grade if they believe the grade assigned does not provide an accurate depiction of their school.
