  • What does “Specialty Schools” and “Magnet Schools” mean?

    Posted by:

At Phoenix Union there are "Specialty Schools" and "Magnet Schools". Specialty schools mean that the school specializes in a specific academic area such as at Franklin, that school focuses on getting students ready for a career in law enforcement or fire fighting along with leadership. At Phoenix Coding Academy their focus is on technology and engineering. A "Magnet School" has a magnet program and in the program you do have to apply and there is special emphasis put on a specific topic. For example, at Central High School their magnet program focuses on Global Studies and also allows students to travel abroad after the program is completed. At Alhambra High School their Magnet School focuses on the Medical Arts.

  • Why is it important to register as soon as possible? Especially if I am still in 8th grade now?

    Posted by:

It is important to register/apply early so that you know if you are getting accepted into the programs that most interest you and the courses that you want to take. When registering the application will ask you to pick 2 - 4 electives and if you wait too long then more than likely you will end up getting your 3rd or 4th pick instead of your first choice. Most courses are on a first come basis. Also, once you are registered with a high school, they will start keeping you informed of upcoming Future Freshman Events, Summer Class opportunities, or Summer Sports Camps or Clinics that will all be available to you if you would like them.

The Valley Metro is also an option for students to use with their student id's for any of the schools in the valley.
