WICOR Parent Night
Posted by AVID Web on 12/1/2017WICOR was all around at a parent event at Barcelona Middle School! Teachers created stations where students and parents could experience WICOR. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Participants experienced: Note-taking, Costa’s leveled questioning, a Socratic Seminar, and they learned all about organization through the use of agendas and binders. It was great to see parents involved in the daily activities Barcelona students experience daily in their classrooms.

Socratic Seminar
Posted by AVID Web on 10/13/2017At Barcelona Middle School the WICOR strategy, Socratic Seminar is in full effect! Mrs. Shawcroft’s 6th grade Language Arts class, has been working hard on this Inquiry and Collaborative strategy. In a Socratic Seminar, participants seek deeper understanding of complex ideas through rigorously thoughtful dialogue. A Socratic Seminar fosters active learning as participants explore and evaluate the ideas, issues, and values in a particular text. These students are using their StudySync text dependent questions to guide their discussions. The skills that students develop through participation in Socratic Seminars are crucial for college success.

Note-Taking in Action!
Posted by AVID Web on 9/4/2017 8:00:00 AMMs. Castellano's 6th grade Social Studies class is working on taking Cornell Notes. The students were engaging in a text about geography and taking notes to support their essential question; What do geographers study? They were also identifying new vocabulary words and definitions that related to their content objective. Focused notes support the "O" and the "W" in WICOR. WICOR stands for; Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to learn. These AVID foundational strategies ensure college readiness for students and lead to increased academic performance for all.

AVID Goals at Barcelona Middle School
Posted by AVID Web on 8/7/2017 8:00:00 AMBarcelona Middle has AVID Secondary up and running in grades 6, 7, and 8! There are three sections of the AVID Elective in grades 6, 7, and 8. The AVID Elective is the core of AVID Secondary. It targets students in the academic middle–B, C, and even D students–with the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and come from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. AVID places these students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in the most rigorous courses that are appropriate for them, such as Honors and Advanced Placement. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality. BMS has three goals for the 2017-18 school year.
Goal #1: Provide monthly professional development on WICOR strategies to teachers during AVID component meetings.
Goal #2: Content area teachers will plan for the use of focused notes by identifying opportunities in all lessons.
Goal #3: Every student will utilize binders and agendas in all content classes daily, to organize assignments and materials.
