Future of AESD

Alhambra Community,

Our district is engaging in proactive, long-term planning to ensure stability, continuity, and strong learning experiences for students and families.

Following community and stakeholder input, district leadership will recommend two planning actions to the Alhambra Governing Board as part of this work. First, we will recommend that the Choice Learning Academy and Westwood school communities be unified into a single PK–8 campus, at the Westwood location beginning in the 2026–27 school year. This recommendation does not involve school boundary changes and is focused on continuity and long-term planning, as the district plans responsibly for future enrollment trends. Second, we will recommend the closure of Valencia Newcomer School at the conclusion of the 2025–26 school year.

At this time, these are recommendations only. No decisions have been made, and nothing is final unless and until the Governing Board takes formal action.

As school districts across the region navigate a variety of challenges, we want to be clear that this planning effort is focused on proactive, long-term stability for Alhambra students. It is not about reducing access to education, but about ensuring students are served in ways that are sustainable and supportive over time.

For students and families, this approach is designed to strengthen experiences over the long term. A unified PK–8 campus has the potential to reduce school transitions, support stronger relationships among students and staff, and expand academic and enrichment opportunities, all while maintaining a stable and supportive school environment. Planning related to Valencia Newcomer School reflects careful consideration of how best to continue serving students through effective programs across the district.

The Governing Board will first review these recommendations at its January 22 meeting. This meeting will serve as an initial hearing only, and no action will be taken at that time. If the Board chooses to move forward, any decision would not occur until the February 12 Governing Board meeting.

No immediate changes are being made. Should the Board approve these recommendations, staffing impacts would be managed thoughtfully, with an emphasis on natural attrition, alignment, and minimizing disruption. No immediate changes are being made, and there would be time for intentional planning and clear communication.

Alhambra Elementary School District remains committed to transparency, stability, and proactive planning that puts students first. We appreciate our families’ and community’s continued partnership as we plan carefully for the future.
