Alhambra Community,
At tonight’s Governing Board meeting, the Alhambra Elementary School District Governing Board took action on two separate items impacting schools across the district.
First, the Governing Board voted to consolidate Choice Learning Academy and Westwood into a single unified PreK–8 school beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. The consolidated school will be located at the current Westwood campus. This action is intended to strengthen programming, maximize resources, and create expanded academic and enrichment opportunities for students within one cohesive PreK–8 model.
In a separate decision, the Governing Board also voted to close Valencia Newcomer School at the end of the current school year. This decision was based on enrollment trends and reflects the district’s responsibility to ensure long-term sustainability while continuing to meet the needs of newcomer students and families.
We recognize these decisions carry deep impact for students, families, and staff. The Governing Board carefully considered enrollment data, facility usage, financial realities, and community feedback before taking action. These were not easy decisions and were made with the long-term strength of the district in mind.
What this means moving forward:
Choice Learning Academy/ Westwood families and staff
Students from both campuses will attend a unified PreK–8 school on the Westwood campus beginning next school year.
Planning is now underway to ensure a smooth transition for students and staff.
Additional details regarding programming, staffing, and transition timelines will be shared directly with families and employees.
The Choice Learning Academy will house our Family Resource Center, Health Services, and our Alternative Learning Center.
Valencia Newcomer School families and staff
Valencia will close at the end of this school year.
District staff have been working closely with Valencia families throughout this school year to support student placement and ensure continuity of services. Valencia’s enrollment is projected to reach zero by mid-March.
Staff will be supported through a transition process, with further information to be shared soon.
Our commitment remains to ensure every student continues to feel welcomed, supported, and positioned for success. We are grateful for the engagement and feedback our community has provided throughout this process and will continue communicating updates as next steps are implemented.
