Alhambra Awards

2007 - 2008

• Cordova Primary School and Sevilla West School were selected as 2 of 19 A+ Schools in the state.

• Dr. Jeff Sprout, principal at Montebello School, was named as one of the first four Rodel Exemplary Principals sponsored by the Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona.

• Christa Prather, sixth grade teacher at Sevilla West School, and Marcia Beldock, eighth grade teacher at Simpson School, received The Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona’s Exemplary Teacher Award.

• The Golden Bell Awards from the Arizona School Boards Association continue to go to Alhambra teachers for their innovative programs. Lisa Elliott, Kristine Smith, and Linda Nguyen, from Montebello School, received a Golden Bell Award for their “GirlPower” after-school program; and Tom Aron and Jim Goertzen from Cordova Middle School won an award for their “Cybernet Games”.

• The Alhambra Foundation for the Future received a first place award in WESTMARC’s Best of the West Awards for our college scholarship program.

• The District received a City of Phoenix Mayor’s Partnership Award for our business partnership with the Back-to-School Clothing Drive Association and the BHHS Legacy Foundation.

Alhambra was selected to receive six ASPRA*tions Awards from Arizona School Public Relations Association. They are:

2006-2007 Awards

  • Andalucia Primary School and Sevilla Primary School were selected as 2 of 12 A+ Schools in the state.
  • Montebello School's "Beyond the Bell" Program, and Andalucia Primary School's "Reading Olympics Program" were named as A+ Exemplary Programs from the Arizona Educational Foundation.
  • Santy Singpradith, sixth grade teacher at Montebello School, was selected as a monthly Platinum Apple Award winner and also Teacher of the Year, sponsored by Great Southwest Mortgage.
  • Scott Buechl, school psychologist at Barcelona Preschool, was selected as the winner of the 2006 Keith Perkins Award sponsored by the Arizona Association of School Psychologists.
  • Kathy Davis, principal at Sevilla West School, was named s the Arizona Association of School Psychologists Administrator of the Year.
  • Paige Brill, 3rd  grade teacher at Montebello, and Ellen Brown, 5th grade teacher at Andalucia Middle School, were selected as Wal-Mart Teachers of the Year
  • Alhambra's Child Nutrition Department received the 2006 Western Region Sunshine Award in the School District's Dedication Category.
  • Dr. Rice and the Technology Department received the 2007 Arizona Technology in Education Alliance's Innovation Award for showing a commitment to technology and education.
  • Alhambra’s Governing Board received 2006 Arizona School Boards Association Total Board Boardsmanship Award.
  • Catherine Zolinski, third grade teacher at Catalina Ventura School, and Scott O’Toole, fourth grade teacher at Montebello School, received The Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona’s Exemplary Teacher Award.
  • Debra La Plante from Carol G. Peck School received a Golden Bell Award, from the Arizona School Boards Association, for her “Poetry and More” after-school program.
  • Karen Schmaltz, Susan Ourada, Nanette Swanson, and Carrie Boyle at Andalucia Primary School received a Golden Bell Award for their “Reading Olympics” program.
  • Rose Sanchez and Carol Conroy from Andalucia Middle School received a Golden Bell Award for their “Let’s Go! – Learning English Together” program.
  • Barcelona Middle School received a Golden Bell Award for their “Genres of the Quarter” program.
  • Alhambra's Head Start received a first place award in WESTMARC’s Best of the West Awards for their Young Artists Program.

 

Dr. Jim Rice, Superintendent, was named as Arizona's 2006  Superintendent of the Year.

2005-2006 Awards

  • Cordova Middle School was 1 of 10 elementary schools in the nation, and Arizona’s only school to receive the Intel and Scholastic National School of Distinction Award.
  • Dr. Jim Rice, Superintendent, received the 2006 Arizona State University’s College of Education Hall of Fame Award, and the 2006 Distinguished Administrator Award in the Superintendent’s Division from the Arizona School Administrators Association.
  • Jackie Doerr, principal at Andalucia Primary School, was selected as the National Distinguished Principal of the Year.
  • Westwood Primary School was selected as a 2006 A+ School in the state.
  • Barcelona Middle School’s “Genre of the Quarter” program was named an A+ Exemplary Program from the Arizona Education Foundation.
  • Granada East School was one of the top 12 schools in Arizona to educate Latino students according to a study conducted by Mary Jo Waite, a well—known researcher in Arizona, and Jim Collins, author of the book Good to Great.
  • Kim Krol, second grade teacher at Catalina Ventura; Linda Sigg, first grade teacher at Carol G. Peck Elementary; and Roberta Perez-Gloria, fifth and sixth grade teacher at Catalina Ventura received The Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona’s Exemplary Teacher Award.
  • Alhambra Traditional School received a Golden Bell Award from the Arizona School Boards Association for their “Parent Academy.”
  • Shelley Mathis from Sevilla Primary School won a Golden Bell Award from the Arizona School Boards Association for her GET REAL (Grow Excel Triumph Reality Education & Accountable Learning) Program.
  • Paul Jungel, fourth grade teacher at Simpson School, received the 2006 Bess Kaplan Media Center Award from the Arizona Itinerant Teachers of the Visually Impaired.
  • Deanna Nottingham, kindergarten teacher at Westwood Primary; Paul Jungel, fourth grade teacher at Simpson School; Dominique Flamm, fourth grade teacher at Andalucia Middle School; and Gerri Layton, special education teacher at Andalucia Middle, were selected as Wal-Mart Teachers of the Year.
  • Arika McGlothlen, fourth grade teacher at Granada East, was a KNIX and Fulton Homes Teacher of the Week.
